Description
The Bf109 is one of the most famous combat aircraft of the Air Force in World War II. More than 33,000 Bf109 were built in many different versions. Both climbing ability and acceleration when diving were two of the Bf109's strengths. The Bf109G series produced since the summer of 1942 showed some notable changes from the previous Bf109F version. The G-5 / G-6 had a MK 151/20 mm cannon that fired through the engine. Two MG 131 machine guns were installed above the engine. The belt feed for improved armament required aerodynamic modifications to the engine cowlings, which gave the aircraft its characteristic bumps.
The G-6 was used extensively on all fronts from March 1943 until the end of the war. Later series of the Bf109 G-6 received a fixed rear window in a one-piece design, which significantly improved the view to the rear. During another modification, the stern was equipped with a rudder that was higher and had a larger area than the previous models. With a total of 13,000 units, the G-6 was the most common of all Bf109s.
