Description
The most famous symbol of the air war over Germany during World War II is the legendary B-17 Flying Fortress. It was designed to do serious damage to the enemy while protecting the crew from enemy fire. The B-17 had more than 7 defensive weapon positions with .50 caliber machine guns. It was able to carry over 4000 pounds of bombs, over 1,800 miles, at a cruising speed of 170 miles per hour. The "G" model was the last production version, and 8,600 aircraft were built in 23 months.
